USA – Senate passes broad immigration reform Bill

28 June 2013

The US Senate has voted to pass the Border Security, Economic Opportunity, and Immigration Modernization Act (S. 744). The Bill brings comprehensive reform of the US immigration system a step closer. Permits Foundation welcomes the inclusion of employment authorization for the spouses of H1B visa holders, under Section 4102 of the Bill. This is one of the reforms to the non-immigrant visa program that Permits Foundation supported though its cooperation with the American Council on International Personnel (ACIP).

ACIP and the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) welcomed the passage through Senate and pledged to work further to ensure that, before a bill goes to the President’s desk, all the high-skilled provisions will provide for U.S. growth and that a Trusted Employer program is created.

Despite bipartisan support and a 68-32 vote in favour in the Senate, the Bill still faces a tough passage in the more conservative House of Representatives.
