Permits Foundation in The Nikkei: Japan and spouse employment

12 January 2026

Permits Foundation has been featured in The Nikkei, Japan’s leading financial newspaper. This comprehensive article covers employer attitudes to spouse employment and how improvements could make Japan a more attractive business destination.

Helen Frew of the Permits Foundation, an international organisation advocating for countries to permit the employment of expatriate spouses, points out, “If family members are not allowed to work, it will be difficult for companies to send expatriates abroad.”

According to the foundation’s survey, over 40% of companies have experienced cases where an expatriate’s assignment was shortened or refused because their spouse could not work at the assignment location. Frew noted, “This could represent a very significant cost for employers.”

The article, which includes perspectives from spouse friendly companies operating in Japan, can be accessed here (original language).
